Liu plays for the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association.
Liu Wei played with Yao Ming for 10 years on the Sharks. He went to America in 1998 to play for an AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) team, and joined the Chinese national team in 2000.
Before the 2004-2005 NBA season, when the Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings played each other twice in the "China Games", the Kings signed Liu for the preseason. However, after playing in three preseason games and getting 2 points and 4 rebounds in 34 minutes, he was not picked for the season. He has since gone back to play for the Sharks in the CBA.
