From now until August 8, Lenovo will be auctioning off 34 limited edition Olympic-themed, athlete-autographed notebooks in its Lenovo Hope Fund Auction. The auctions mirror the Olympic torch relay, kicking off in a different country every week. Proceeds go to micro-finance, development and sports charities.
You'll Be Hearing from Haier
Chinese appliance brand Haier is enlisting some heavy hitters—namely DDB San Francisco, Initiative Marketing and Motorola's former Asia CMO—to help it leverage its Olympic sponsorship into better brand awareness. Since Haier is a national sponsor, its Olympic campaign won't be seen outside of China, but the company is clearly working toward a better global reach.
Jia You: Olympic Oil Imports
China's oil importers are making record imports of gasoline this month, reportedly to make sure the country is well stocked for the Olympics. Among the things that could go wrong in August, it's a pretty safe bet that a diesel and gas shortage like the one that hit some provinces last fall and winter will not be among them.
A Better Press Box
Seven Network Australia, in conjunction with Beijing Television, has formed a joint venture, Beijing International Media Services Company, will offer a broad range of production services to media covering the games. The Australian reports that their site at Pangzu Plaza is superior to the facilities that BOCOG is furnishing reporters.
