China's national women's basketball team beat Cuba 66-58 last night, improving to 4-0 in the Good Luck Beijing International Invitational Tournament.

The Chinese team came out looking a little timid against the stronger Cubans, pulling out on fast break opportunities and fading away on shots inside the paint. But the team began spreading the floor, moving the ball and knocking down threes. Minor injuries to point guard Yamara Amargo Delgado and explosive small forward Suchitel Avila Cazanas helped dampen Cuba's comeback efforts and China coasted to the win.

China's high scorers were Chen Xiaoli with 17 points and Miao Lijie with 15. The team was perfect from the line at 16-16.

Tonight, China faces the United States, who are 3-1 in the tournament and coming off of a 78-60 rout of New Zealand in which they rested their starters for most of the second half. The game starts at 8:00 and tickets can be bought at Wukesong Basketball Arena for 20, 40 or 60 yuan. Whoever loses tonight will get another shot at their opponent in a higher-stakes game this weekend. The teams will face each other again in the tournament final at 8:00 on Saturday, April 26.

To get to Wukesong(五棵松)take the Line 1 subway to the Wukesong stop. The arena is to the northeast, past the baseball stadium.

Key Women's Volleyball Players Back in Action

Saturday, 1st March 2008 ~ Maggie ~ Link ~ Comments (0)

Middle blocker Zhao Ruirui and setter Feng Kun are back in action with the Chinese women's volleyball team, after knee injuries that have kept them sidelined for about a year in Feng's case, and almost four in Zhao's.

The 6'5" (1.97-meter) Zhao, the team's linchpin, has not seen much action since leading the team to a gold medal at the Athens Games in 2004. Feng has been out for about a year following knee surgery. The pair returned for a friendly series against Cuba, which includes matches in Fuzhou, Jinjiang and Xiamen.

Zhao looked healthy and very happy to be playing in the first four matches of the series. She is averaging 10.7 points per game, according to this report from China Daily.

Loisel Escaping the Axe?

Sunday, 24th February 2008 ~ Maggie ~ Link ~ Comments (0)

Going into the East Asian Cup, Chinese media was abuzz with the inevitability of the demise of Elisabeth Loisel, the French coach brought in last fall to replace her Swedish predecessor as head coach of the women's national soccer (football) team. In the weeks leading up to the cup in Chongqing, she'd been fined by the club for tardiness, and offended officials by forbidding players from attending a hot pot dinner they were hosting. Win the tournament, the conventional wisdom was, and she just might keep her job. Well, China didn't win. They looked in good form beating South Korea and then went on to tie North Korea. But then they lost 3-0 to Japan.

In the two days after the loss, no word is out on her status and Loisel spoke to the media about her hopes for the Olympics in August. Have the problems been sorted out, or are team officials just waiting to see how the team fares in the upcoming Algarve Cup in Portugal?

Here is the Agence France-Presse story of Loisel's reaction to the East Asian Cup loss.
